ROB SAWYER www.robsawyer.com.au -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- "Rob Sawyer was absolutely amazing. He really knows how to use that guitar of his...only word I can think of to describe it is `brilliant`" - www.iota.com.au "Rob Sawyer ... Whoa, he was fantastic! I'd never seen him before, and he was just really really amazing!" - www.carus.com.au After a huge 2003, in which not only did Rob win the Frankston International Guitar Festival Young Guitarist of the Year, PBS Songwriter of the Year competition and the Apollo Bay Young Musician Award, he also managed to graduate from High School, turn 18 and get his drivers license. A monster year in anyone's books. "I got my first guitar at the age of 14. It was coming up to my older brother's birthday and he had been playing some guitar at school. He decided that he would like a guitar for his birthday. Somehow we ended up at Frankston Cash Converters looking at some second hand guitars. Ben finally convinced mum that she should buy him a guitar for his birthday. Guitar was always something I liked the idea of when I was younger so I convinced mum to get me one too" Rob explains. After having songs featured in Australian Guitar Magazine, Rob quickly shot to the attention of touring artists and picked up several international touring supports. A tour in April with visiting US artist Donovan Frankenreiter saw Rob sell out an initial pressing of 500 of his debut EP in 5 shows. "Sawyer is on another level as a guitarist and this is no exaggeration. He is one of those performers you'll stare at for their entire time under lights (much like John Butler) and wonder about their upbringing- their reason and drive for music, as well as their day to day life. Few artists emanate this." - Xpress Magazine WA April '04 "Somewhere along that track I started listening to a lot more acoustic fingerstyle artists like Tommy Emanuel and Adam Lester, started to write songs like them so that I could learn that style of playing. The people I was listening to were too advanced to figure out their songs, so I wrote some songs to learn the fingerstyle guitar technique." He follows in the footsteps of recent Australian artists like Xavier Rudd, John Butler but also the guitar stylings of other notable guitarists like Jeff Lang and Tommy Emmanuel....and manages to tread a neat path between all, drawing upon a vast array of influences from folk and reggae music right through to roots and foot stomping blues, all the whilst sculpting a unique individual sound. Touring will always be an essential part of Rob's grand scheme; he will be performing live throughout forthcoming months, up and down the country in pubs, theatres and festivals alike. One thing for sure, Rob loves his music, and we hope you will too. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- www.robsawyer.com.au
